" (...)Portal do Fidalgo is made by Provam, a family operation where we saw tractor upon tractor waiting close to midnight to weigh their grapes because of the fair prices wich they give for the grapes right on the spot.While most people stick with the Spanish counterpart, this Alvarinho was rated the best value by the New YorkTimes . I'm tickled to think about Asimov & his buddies swirling this wine that we so enjoyed last september with the winemaker in Provam's humble tasting room. My notes from that day read, "Perfumed talcumpowder, apricots, banana, sweet sensations, citrus, clean finish, a little almond". The New York Times wrote, "Succulent, vivacious & pure, lively & complex. The kind of wine you want to keep drinking..." These wines were some of the most pleasurable from my trip-both in the refreshing nature of the wine & the people who produce them. Feel good wine!
Vinho Verde produces some of Portugal's most memorable white wines, from the bubbly fresh "green wines" to sophisticated Alvarinho's. Varanda do Conde's reminds me of the mountain springs that ribbon the northern valleys, with a subtle hint of the sea. Grapefruit, while blossom & nectarine flavors with all the romance of Alvarinho &Trajadura. Heavenly with seafood dishes such as my favorite, Arroz de Mariscos, rice cooked in savory tomato broth piled high with succulent local lobster, shrimp, clams & crab claws.
